Walk and scramble along the fantastic Rum Cuillin. This airy ridge walk may not reach Munro heights but its traverse will be an exceptional and challenging mountain experience.
Using the WalkDeeside luxury minibus we will depart from Aberdeen early on Friday morning and drive over to Mallaig, stopping at pick up points en route. During the 80 minute crossing to Rum there will be plenty of time for you to eat your packed lunch and enjoy the dramatic views back towards the mainland and of our approach to Rum. Arriving at Kinloch your bags will be picked up from the quay whilst we walk along the shore, stopping at the SNH Visitor centre and then on to our hostel accommodation. Before dinner there will be plenty of time to settle in, join other guests in the kitchen for a mug of tea and gather to discuss the plans for Saturday. After dinner we will prepare our packed lunches so that we are ready for an early start in the morning.
Our first ascent will be up the north-west ridge of Hallival from where there are fine views of our route ahead. We will then carry on over rocky ground to the highest peak of the day, Askival, before a steep descent and climb up to the twin-topped summit of Trallval. Then we will push on to Ainshval followed by the final summit of the day, Sgurr nan Gillean. We then contour down to the coastal path at Dibidil bothy, a good place for a rest before the long walk back above the steep cliffs to Kinloch and a well deserved meal served by WalkDeeside.
On Sunday it is well worth exploring more of the island. We may walk along the track to the beautiful bay at Harris and have our lunch besides the Greek style Mausoleum, or we could head north to Kilmory Bay in search of red deer and the white-tailed sea eagle. We may also see the famous Rum ponies. Then we will return to the hostel and a welcome meal.
On Monday you may choose to get up early to go otter watching at the hide on Loch Scresort, or just to enjoy a more leisurely breakfast. Later in the morning, you will have the opportunity to tour the Edwardian Kinloch Castle. Wandering around this extravagant building with its amazing contents, largely untouched in the last 50 years, is an incredible experience.
Then it will be time to load our bags back onto the truck and to walk down to the quay to await the ferry to Mallaig, and the rest our journey home.
