John Muir was a Scottish born man (1838-1914) who emigrated to
North America at the age of 11yrs. It was here that he developed
his love and fascination with wild places and, in particular, the
mountains. He grew to become one of the pioneers of the conservation of wild and beautiful places. It was through his pressure on the
Roosevelt and Wilson-led US Government that the first National Park
was set up at Yellowstone.
The John Muir trust was set up in 1983 to remember him and to honour
and carry on his ideals, through managing land areas to be conserved
as wild places in Scotland and also through education in the form
of courses, including the John Muir Award.
